A Hawk Visits the Ranch

During the Cascade Fire a hawk was sited down by the road near the creek crossing before you get to the Sheds. Lots of people saw it over the course of several days. It was relatively unafraid and seemed to be healthy. However, it never seemed to fly. One night we decided to call the Nature Center, which rescues animals and birds in trouble, to ask about it. They came out and caught it and sent it to the Raptor Center in Bozeman. It turns out that it is a fledgling female ferruginous hawk and that it was suffering from smoke inhalation which compromised its lung capacity so it couldn't fly.
These hawks are seen around here but are uncommon. The Raptor Center
kept it for about a week giving it oxygen and whatever can be done for a bird with smoke inhalation. Then they brought it back and released it in the same spot. Lo and behold its MOTHER was there to greet it!!!
