Fall in Montana!

Ranch Manager Jael Kampfe reports on shipping cattle and the 5.2 ft snowfall October 1o-12

So this is what the last week has been for me...
Monday: Jim Bode Scott, the owner of the heifers, decides he wants to ship 1800 yearlings by Thursday, which means...
Tuesday: We talk the oil company (they are doing seismic work on the ranch and have it rented) to take Thad up in a helicopter to look for strays.
pm. We bring strays closer to headquarters. Two wild ones came home from the West Rosebud. We didn't put them in John Mackay's yard.
Wednesday: Bring cattle to the corrals. Start sorting off cows from heifers.
5:00 pm. Call Jim Bode to tell him cattle are in the corrals and we are starting to sort. He decides to send up trucks and ship all cows.
8:30 pm. Too dark to keep shipping and sorting.
Thursday: 5:45 saddle up to start shipping by 6:30 am
7:00 am Storm is coming that will be significant. First time that the forecast mentions any accumulation. Have to find someone to shut down the Summer Cabin that isn't winterized. Clean the Stokke Cabin. Move guests. Clean Summer Cabin before water is turned off.
Noon Find out Oil Company is expecting one more guest. Tell crew member (Stephanie) to move out of staff housing (Grey House). Start cleaning that house for new guest.
3:00 pm The snow starts.
4:00 pm Find out oil well guest will stay in town until next night.
7:00 pm 22 trucks are loaded and down the driveway with all 1800 heifers. Blizzard has begun. Jim Bode Scott
Friday: 1 foot of snow
8:00 am ride out to look for pairs and bring them down country. (Still have 170 Hawks pairs and some heifer strays).
1:00 pm 2 riders haven't returned. Hook up truck and trailer. Start a search and rescue. Still cleaning Grey House.
3:00 pm 2 riders show up. Got turned around in the blizzard. sent 45 pairs down the East Rosebud valley, one drainage AWAY from headquarters.
6:00 pm 2 feet of snow
Saturday: 7:00 am 3 feet of snow
8:00 am start chaining up the road grater, four wheelers, skid steer, and one truck start plowing. Get stuck. Pull out. Repeat many times throughout the day.
Plow all day. Get road to gate open. Road to cattle open. Barn yard plowed. Locate cattle and horses. Nothing fed though.
3:00 finish getting Grey House ready for guests; including moving furniture in the storm.
Sunday: 4 1/2 feet of snow, perhaps more
9:00 am start plowing. Check on cattle with four wheeler. Bring all horses together to same pasture (walking through 4 feet of snow is exhausting.) Plow road to hay barns. Plow path to feed two bunches of cattle and horses.
2:00 pm Stop for lunch
3:00 pm Feed horses. Feed cattle. Count horses. Two short.
6:00 pm Find and feed cattle in East Rosebud.
7:00 pm Eat dinner.
8:00 pm Go to bed exhausted.
